CHESLYN HAY UKA DAY
Sat 2nd June 2018
Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre, Saredon Road, Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire, WS6 7JQ
SUMMARY OF EVENT
This is the first UK Autoharp Day to be held at Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre.
Our Local Host, June Barke, has found us what looks to be a wonderful new venue in her local area. Here is some information about local attractions for those of you who would like to spend a few days in the area having a look round.
Cannock stands on the edge of Cannock Chase which has been designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)’, an accolade which brings many visitors to the area every year. Industrially, the town had a rural economy until the increased coal mining activities in the 19th century. These days the town serves as a commuter town to other surrounding towns and cities, but has become increasingly popular for new industry and commerce.
Adjacent to ‘The Chase’, Cannock is an excellent centre for touring the Midlands area and Cannock Chase itself is absolutely beautiful to stroll around. We have two Visitor Centres where information about ‘what to do’ is readily available. There is a small Town Centre shopping centre, 3 weekly markets and several ‘out of town shopping sites’ fairly close by. The town has quite a number of eateries and bars. The area used to consist of several smaller villages, but they are all now under the umbrella of Cannock Chase District Council. It is generally a very busy town having almost 100,000 inhabitants and the road networks are fairly good.
Cannock Chase lies close to a superb rail and road network providing easy access to Birmingham, Manchester, Derby and London. The A5 and A34 trunk roads, M6 and M6 Toll provide east-west and north-south routes and being close to the M54, provide rapid access to Telford, Shrewsbury and beyond. We have good access to 3 airports -Birmingham (about 45 mins), with Manchester and East Midlands both about 1 hour away.
